The Philadelphia Phillies have lost another arm from their pitching depth chart after veteran right-hander Bryse Wilson was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Cubs on June 24.
Philadelphia designated Wilson for assignment earlier in the week, and the Cubs moved quickly to add the nine-year MLB veteran as they continue to deal with multiple injuries on their pitching staff.
According to Cubs reporter Meghan Montemurro, Chicago officially claimed Wilson off waivers while designating right-hander Christian Roa for assignment.
Wilson had recently exercised his upward mobility clause, prompting the Phillies to select his contract on June 18, but his stay on the active roster proved brief.
Just four days later, Philadelphia designated him for assignment, and within two days he was claimed away.
Wilson made only one appearance for the Phillies, tossing two scoreless innings. Despite the solid outing, the organization chose to move on as it continued reshaping its pitching staff.
Over his major-league career, Wilson owns a 20-23 record with a 4.80 ERA across 164 games and 463 innings pitched, giving the Cubs an experienced depth option during a period of roster uncertainty.
While Wilson departs, the Phillies remain focused on addressing a larger concern ahead of the August 3 MLB trade deadline—adding pitching.
The club has been searching for stability in the fifth spot of the rotation following Andrew Painter’s demotion.
Interim manager Don Mattingly indicated the team is evaluating multiple approaches for the role, including traditional starts and opener strategies depending on matchups.
For now, Alan Rangel appears to be the leading candidate for the fifth starter’s job after strong performances in the minors and recent opportunities at the major-league level.
The Phillies have also retained Seth Johnson while optioning Max Lazar, a move Mattingly said reflects the organization’s pitching depth.
Even so, Philadelphia is widely expected to pursue additional quality arms before the trade deadline as it looks to strengthen both its rotation and bullpen for a postseason push.
