The New York Mets finally snapped their slump on Wednesday, edging the Minnesota Twins 3-2 to end a brutal 12-game losing streak. While the victory offers some relief, the team still finds itself in a difficult position, tied for the worst record in MLB and facing an uphill battle moving forward.
Although it may be early to fully dive into the trade market, it’s reasonable to expect the Mets and president of baseball operations David Stearns to be active buyers this summer given their lack of success so far. One proposed deal from SI.com’s Ryan Shea suggests bringing former Atlanta Braves World Series MVP Jorge Soler to New York in exchange for two players.
Trade buzz around Soler continues to build beyond just one report. An ESPN analyst recently labeled the Los Angeles Angels slugger as their top trade candidate if the team falls out of contention. With concerns surrounding pitching depth and roster strength, the Angels could look to move Soler—though historically, they’ve been hesitant to sell.
Shea’s suggested package includes prospects Jonathan Santucci and Eli Serrano III, which could appeal to an Angels team potentially seeking young talent later in the season.
Meanwhile, Soler has started 2026 strong, posting five home runs, 19 RBIs, and a .443 slugging percentage through 22 games, along with a 117 OPS+.
Known more for power than average, he previously proved his value by winning World Series MVP after a midseason trade to Atlanta in 2021.
For the Mets, designated hitter production has been a major issue. Through 24 games, their DHs have combined for just two home runs and an OPS barely over .600—far from ideal for a role typically reserved for a team’s top power bat. Soler’s home-run potential could help address that weakness, even if his defense remains a liability.
