Former Kansas State center Sam Hecht became the second player with ties to the Wildcats to land with the Carolina Panthers in the 2026 NFL Draft, joining another rookie who previously transferred out of the program.
Hecht had to wait until the fifth round before hearing his name called, with four other players at his position selected ahead of him, but he still emerged as one of the top offensive linemen taken in that round.
During his time at Kansas State, he appeared in 42 games and started the final 25 of his college career, earning multiple All-Big 12 and Academic honors along the way.
Now entering the NFL, Hecht steps into a Panthers offensive line unit that, despite the team’s 5–12 record last season, performed at a high level compared to many around the league.
Anchored by standout linemen like Damien Lewis, the group offers both competition and opportunity for the rookie.
Realistically, Hecht is unlikely to secure a starting role immediately, as most rookie centers develop behind veterans.
However, his consistent starting experience, durability, and leadership at the college level give him a strong foundation to grow into a reliable option in the future.
Early in his career, he will likely contribute in a reserve role, working on the scout team and earning reps where possible. If he adapts well to the physical and mental demands of the NFL, Hecht has the potential to develop into a dependable presence on the Panthers’ offensive line over time.
