The Philadelphia Phillies will wrap up their home series against the Athletics on Thursday night after earning a 6-3 victory on Wednesday, putting them in position to complete a three-game sweep.
Before Thursday’s matchup, Philadelphia announced it had claimed right-handed pitcher Grant Holman off waivers from the Detroit Tigers and assigned him to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
The Phillies shared the update on X, confirming that Holman will immediately join the organization’s Triple-A affiliate.
Originally selected in the sixth round of the 2021 MLB Draft, Holman has spent parts of two MLB seasons with the Athletics. Across 40 career appearances, the 25-year-old owns a 5-3 record with a 4.66 ERA.

The move quickly sparked reactions across social media. Reporter Ty Daubert pointed out that Holman once threw a no-hitter during the 2013 Little League World Series, while Evan Woodbery noted the pitcher had been designated for assignment by Detroit just four days earlier.

Jeff Kerr also highlighted that the Phillies’ 40-man roster now sits at 39 players following the claim.
Others broke down Holman’s pitching arsenal, which features a mid-90s fastball along with a splitter and slider. He posted a 5.09 ERA over 23 innings with the Athletics last season.

Although Holman has not appeared in a major league game during the 2026 season, the Phillies view him as a potential low-risk bullpen addition with upside.
Philadelphia has also started turning its season around after a rough opening month. The Phillies have gone 8-2 over their last ten games and currently sit third in the NL East with a 17-20 record.
Following the Athletics series, they will remain at Citizens Bank Park to begin a weekend set against the Colorado Rockies on Friday.
