The Boston Red Sox have been frequently connected to various first basemen around Major League Baseball over the past year and a half, even after acquiring Willson Contreras this offseason in a notable move. However, it is still unclear whether Boston sees Contreras as their long-term solution at the position, especially as he enters the later stages of his career, which could push the team to explore other options.
One name that has repeatedly surfaced is Houston Astros first baseman Christian Walker. Alongside him, Isaac Paredes has also been mentioned as a potential target, with Paredes viewed as a particularly strong fit given Boston’s ongoing need at third base.
Although the Red Sox are interested, they are not alone in the chase. According to reports, multiple teams are monitoring both Astros hitters if Houston decides to become a seller.
“Christian Walker and Isaac Paredes are potential trade candidates if Houston sells. Walker, 35, has impressed in his second season with the Astros, batting .276/.351/.513 with nine home runs and 27 RBIs while playing on a three-year, $60 million deal through 2027.
Paredes has also been a frequent subject of trade rumors and was previously linked to Boston in the offseason, though several teams have shown interest. He is currently hitting .271/.362/.391 with three home runs and 17 RBIs this season,” reported Robert Murray.
While Houston has not fallen apart to the same extent as Boston, both clubs have underperformed expectations to some degree. Paredes, in particular, is widely seen as a strong trade candidate in the coming months.
Still, unless the Red Sox significantly improve their season, it may be wiser for them to wait until the offseason to reassess their needs and pursue upgrades more strategically.
