New York Yankees rookie Spencer Jones, known for his massive power, showed just how dangerous his contact can be during Friday night’s game against the New York Mets.
Facing Mets right-hander Clay Holmes, Jones ripped a hard-hit ball straight back up the middle that struck Holmes on the leg and deflected into fair territory, allowing Jones to reach safely with a single.
Although the play went down as a base hit, it turned out to be far more costly for New York, as Holmes suffered a fractured fibula on the play. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza later confirmed that Holmes will be sidelined for an extended period.

It has been that kind of season for the Mets, who continue to struggle with injuries and misfortune on top of inconsistent play.

Jones, meanwhile, had no intent to cause injury, as the play was simply the result of a sharply struck ball back through the middle. Still, the outcome left one New York team celebrating his power, while the other was left dealing with the consequences.
As the Subway Series continues this weekend, the rivalry between the Yankees and Mets adds another dramatic and unfortunate twist.
