The Philadelphia Phillies are set to open a series on Monday against the San Diego Padres in California after coming off a 3–1 home loss to the Cleveland Guardians, dropping two of three in that set.
Before the matchup, Philadelphia made a roster move by releasing minor league infielder Sergio Alcántara, who was hitting .223 with 25 hits, two home runs, and 13 RBIs in Triple-A, making him a free agent after a journeyman MLB career across several teams.
Alcántara, 29, has appeared in 193 major league games with a .207 career average, spending time with clubs including the Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs, Arizona Diamondbacks, San Diego Padres, and San Francisco Giants.

The Phillies currently sit second in the NL East at 26–27, while the Padres are also second in their division at 31–21 entering the series.
