Infielder Drew Ellis, who last played in Major League Baseball with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2023, has officially announced his retirement from professional baseball, sharing the news in an Instagram post on May 26.
The 30-year-old appeared in 47 MLB games across three seasons (2021–2023) with the Phillies, Seattle Mariners, and Arizona Diamondbacks, finishing his big league career with a .157 batting average, three home runs, and 10 RBIs.
A Kentucky native, Ellis’s baseball journey began early, even representing his region at the 2008 Little League World Series. He wrapped up his playing days in 2025 with the Sacramento River Cats, the Triple-A affiliate of the San Francisco Giants.
Drafted 44th overall in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft by the Diamondbacks out of Louisville, Ellis spent several years developing in Arizona’s system before making his MLB debut in 2021.
After brief stints with Seattle and Philadelphia, he continued to move through different organizations, including time in the Angels system, before finishing at Triple-A Sacramento in 2024, where he posted a .222/.333/.437 slash line over 52 games.
Reflecting on his career, Ellis described it as a remarkable 20-year journey filled with memories, travel, and gratitude for the chance to play at the highest level of the sport.
