South Carolina could be close to getting one of its biggest defensive stars back just in time for the start of SEC play.
Standout edge rusher Dylan Stewart has returned to practice after missing the Gamecocks’ first two games while recovering from a lingering back injury.
The issue dates back to last season, when Stewart played through the problem, leading South Carolina to take a cautious approach with its premier pass rusher.
Stewart took another major step in his recovery this week by practicing in full pads and participating in contact drills.
Head coach Shane Beamer said Stewart and offensive tackle Jacarrius Peak were extremely unlikely to play against Towson, but he remained hopeful that both could make progress toward returning the following week.
That makes South Carolina’s Sept. 19 SEC opener against Mississippi State a potential target for Stewart’s return.
While there is still no guarantee that he will be cleared, the conference opener has emerged as an early possibility for his comeback.
If he continues progressing without setbacks, the Gamecocks could have their defensive star back when the level of competition takes a major step up.
South Carolina would certainly welcome the boost. Stewart has already developed into one of the team’s most disruptive defenders, totaling 56 tackles, 22.5 tackles for loss, 11 sacks and six forced fumbles during his first two seasons.
His ability to pressure quarterbacks and create havoc from the edge makes him a major weapon for the Gamecocks’ defense.
The Gamecocks have had the luxury of not rushing Stewart because of their favorable early schedule.
South Carolina opened the season with a dominant 57-0 victory over Kent State, allowing the coaching staff to give its star defender additional recovery time.
Even with Towson next on the schedule, the priority appears to be making sure Stewart is completely healthy before bringing him back.
With Stewart now practicing in full pads and progressing into contact work, his return is becoming increasingly realistic.
If he clears the remaining medical hurdles, South Carolina could have its biggest defensive playmaker back at precisely the right time.
A return against Mississippi State would give the Gamecocks a significant boost as they begin SEC play and finally unleash a player who has been patiently working his way back.
