INJURY UPDATE: New York Mets Finally Reveal Expected Return Date for Key Injured Player as Long-Awaited Comeback Could Provide Major Midseason Boost

The New York Mets have endured a disappointing season so far, but they could soon get a major boost with the potential return of first baseman Jorge Polanco.

Polanco has been sidelined since mid-April due to Achilles bursitis and a wrist injury, and while his recovery has taken time, he may be ready to rejoin the lineup as early as next weekend’s series against the San Diego Padres.

According to New York Post reporter Mike Puma, the Mets are optimistic about that timeline, noting he will not be available for the upcoming series in Seattle.

Polanco has emphasized that there is no urgency in his return, stressing that his focus is on being fully healthy before rejoining the team. He told SNY that he wants to come back only when he feels physically ready to contribute at a high level.

Signed to a two-year, $40 million deal this past offseason, Polanco was brought in to help replace Pete Alonso at first base. However, his production in a limited sample this season has been underwhelming, as he has posted a .179 batting average with a .532 OPS across 14 games.

By contrast, he showed strong offensive production in 2025 with the Seattle Mariners, hitting 26 home runs, driving in 78 runs, and posting an .821 OPS over 138 games. For his career, he remains a steady contributor with a .262 average and a .768 OPS.

Now sitting at 25-33 and in last place in the NL East, the Mets are hoping Polanco’s eventual return can help stabilize the lineup and spark a turnaround as the season moves into the summer months.
