The Atlanta Braves are focused on reaching the All-Star break without further damaging their already thin pitching staff.
What was once considered a strength has become a growing concern, as injuries and inconsistency have placed increased pressure on the rotation during the season’s midpoint.
Atlanta previously held a commanding 10-game lead in the NL East, but that cushion has shrunk significantly, leaving the Braves with only a three-game advantage.
In an effort to address their pitching concerns, the organization recently accelerated the timeline of one of its top prospects.
Before Monday’s game against the New York Mets, the Braves promoted right-hander Owen Murphy to the major league roster for the first time.
Murphy, the 20th overall pick in the 2022 MLB Draft, has spent most of the season at Triple-A Gwinnett, where he posted a 3.88 ERA across 11 starts.
He also made five starts at Double-A earlier in the year. Entering the season, Murphy was ranked among Atlanta’s top prospects and was not expected to reach the majors until several years from now, making his promotion a notable development.
While the arrival of Murphy could provide a temporary boost, Atlanta may ultimately look outside the organization for additional help.
General manager Alex Anthopoulos recently suggested that the Braves intend to be active buyers ahead of the trade deadline if they remain in contention.
That possibility has fueled speculation about a major move for Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. Several analysts have identified Atlanta as one of the most logical landing spots for the standout left-hander, who has returned to dominant form after recovering from injury.
A trade for Skubal would significantly strengthen a Braves rotation that has struggled to stay healthy.
His presence alongside Chris Sale would give Atlanta one of the most intimidating postseason pitching duos in baseball and could improve the club’s chances of competing with top National League contenders such as the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Skubal is currently in the final season of his contract with Detroit, making him a potential short-term acquisition.
Even so, if he were able to help Atlanta make a deep postseason run or capture another World Series title, the cost of acquiring him could be viewed as worthwhile.
With the trade deadline approaching and the division race tightening, the Braves appear prepared to explore every option available.
Whether through internal promotions like Owen Murphy or a blockbuster deal for an established ace, Atlanta is searching for the pitching reinforcements needed to remain a championship contender.
