The Philadelphia Phillies have completely revived their season after a disastrous 9-19 start that ultimately led to the dismissal of manager Rob Thomson.
Since veteran skipper Don Mattingly took over, Philadelphia has surged back into contention, compiling a 53-43 record and moving within two games of the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East.
Despite the turnaround, the Phillies still have several areas that need improvement if they hope to capture their first World Series title since 2008.
The club could use additional pitching depth in both the rotation and bullpen, while the season-ending lat injury suffered by Adolis Garcia has left a significant hole in the outfield.
With the Aug. 3 MLB trade deadline approaching, speculation continues to grow about potential additions. ESPN insider Jeff Passan recently identified Minnesota Twins star Byron Buxton as an ideal target for Philadelphia, believing the veteran center fielder could address multiple needs at once.
Why Buxton Fits Philadelphia
Buxton, a three-time All-Star, has been one of baseball’s most productive outfielders this season. Although a hip strain will keep him out of the All-Star Game, the 32-year-old is batting .271 with a .904 OPS, 25 home runs, and 45 RBIs in 75 games.
His right-handed bat could be especially valuable for a Phillies lineup that has struggled against left-handed pitching.
While sluggers Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, and Brandon Marsh provide plenty of left-handed power, Philadelphia has posted underwhelming numbers versus southpaws, making Buxton an attractive offensive upgrade.
The veteran would also bolster the defense. A Gold Glove winner in 2017, Buxton remains one of the game’s premier center fielders.
Philadelphia has relied heavily on rookie Justin Crawford in center field this season, but Crawford recently missed time with a knee issue and has produced modest run production despite appearing in 88 games.
Trade Appears Unlikely
While Buxton may be a perfect fit on paper, the chances of a blockbuster deal appear slim. Twins general manager Jeremy Zoll recently shut down speculation, stating that Minnesota has no intention of trading the franchise cornerstone.
Adding another obstacle, Buxton possesses a full no-trade clause and has reportedly shown little interest in waiving it.
The veteran remains under contract for two more seasons at just over $15 million annually, giving Minnesota additional incentive to keep him in its long-term plans.
Deadline Storyline Worth Monitoring
The Twins enter the second half at 47-49 and sit third in the American League Central, which has fueled speculation about potential roster moves.
However, unless Minnesota dramatically changes course, Buxton appears likely to remain with the organization.
Even so, the Phillies’ reported interest highlights the front office’s desire to add impact talent before the trade deadline as Philadelphia looks to complete one of baseball’s most impressive turnarounds and make a serious postseason push.
