The Philadelphia Phillies have firmly established themselves as buyers ahead of the 2026 MLB trade deadline, a remarkable turnaround after opening the season with a disappointing 9-19 record.
With the August 3 deadline drawing near, Philadelphia’s front office is expected to focus on strengthening two key areas: the bullpen and the outfield.
According to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb, the Phillies could look to a division rival for bullpen help, with the New York Mets potentially emerging as a trade partner.
Gelb identified veteran left-handed relievers A.J. Minter and Brooks Raley as two realistic targets who could bolster Philadelphia’s relief corps without requiring a massive prospect package.
Both pitchers are expected to attract interest around the league as the deadline approaches. Minter has been highly effective this season, posting a 1.42 ERA with 17 strikeouts and a 0.84 WHIP over 19 innings.
The 32-year-old’s ability to handle high-leverage situations would make him a valuable addition to Philadelphia’s bullpen.
Raley has also enjoyed a strong campaign. The 38-year-old left-hander owns a 2.02 ERA with 37 strikeouts across 35.2 innings and has remained one of the more reliable veteran relievers in the National League.
His experience and consistency could provide another late-inning option for the Phillies.
Philadelphia’s need for left-handed bullpen help has become increasingly apparent, as several of its current options have struggled to deliver consistent results.
Adding either Minter or Raley would address that weakness while providing the club with proven arms for a potential postseason push.
Because both relievers are set to become free agents after the season, their acquisition cost may remain relatively manageable, an important factor for a Phillies organization that does not possess one of baseball’s deepest farm systems.
While no deal is imminent, the possibility of Philadelphia and New York completing a rare division-rival trade is one storyline worth watching as the deadline approaches.
