As the MLB trade deadline approaches, the Philadelphia Phillies are expected to focus on three key areas of need: a fifth starter, a right-handed-hitting outfielder, and bullpen help in high-leverage situations.
While adding a starter and an outfielder remains important, the bullpen has become an even greater concern following Brad Keller’s season-ending injury and recent struggles among several relievers.
Because of that, Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller identified Houston Astros closer Josh Hader as Philadelphia’s ideal trade target.
Hader Seen as Dream Bullpen Addition
Although the Phillies already have a closer, Miller believes adding an elite left-handed reliever like Hader would significantly strengthen the bullpen for a postseason run.
The veteran southpaw has been dominant in 2026, posting a 1.47 ERA with 11 saves and 29 strikeouts in 18.1 innings across 20 appearances.
Several Obstacles Stand in the Way
Despite Hader’s appeal, a deal appears difficult to envision. The Astros may remain in contention and choose not to sell at the deadline, which could take Hader off the market entirely.
Additionally, the veteran reliever holds a full no-trade clause, giving him complete control over any potential move.
His long-term contract also complicates matters. Hader is signed through 2028 under a five-year, $95 million deal, meaning any trade would likely require a substantial financial commitment and a significant prospect package.
Perfect Fit, Unlikely Scenario
While Hader would give Philadelphia one of baseball’s most formidable late-inning combinations alongside Jhoan Duran, the combination of Houston’s competitive position, Hader’s contract, and his no-trade protection makes such a blockbuster trade unlikely.
Still, if the Phillies could pull it off, it would dramatically boost their bullpen ahead of the postseason.
