While each need is important, ESPN insider Buster Olney believes one move is virtually guaranteed. He reported that the Phillies are expected to acquire a veteran starting pitcher before the August 3 trade deadline, making rotation help the club’s top priority.
Philadelphia has cycled through several pitchers in the No. 5 role this season.
Top prospect Andrew Painter struggled in his first taste of the majors, while Alan Rangel, Brian Keller, and even bullpen games have failed to provide consistent results. The instability has made adding another starter increasingly urgent.
Fortunately for the Phillies, the trade market features several appealing options. Veterans such as Robbie Ray of the Giants and Kevin Gausman of the Blue Jays are viewed as realistic targets, while Freddy Peralta and Clay Holmes have also been mentioned as possible fits.
Although stars like Tarik Skubal or Casey Mize would be attractive additions, their acquisition costs could be too steep. With multiple quality starters potentially available, the biggest question is which arm Dave Dombrowski ultimately chooses to bolster Philadelphia’s rotation.
