The Philadelphia Phillies have spent much of the season testing different pitching options, frequently moving arms between the majors and minors in search of a dependable bullpen combination.
One recent roster decision, however, carries more significance than a typical transaction. For veteran right-hander Colin Peluse, it marks the end of his playing career while opening the door to a new chapter within the organization.
Peluse joined Philadelphia after spending the first six seasons of his professional career in the Oakland Athletics’ system.
Signed by the Phillies to a minor-league deal in November 2025, the 2019 ninth-round pick entered 2026 hoping to finally earn his first major-league opportunity.
Instead, he spent the majority of the season with Double-A Reading and never reached the big leagues.
Now, Peluse will remain with the Phillies, but in a completely different role. Philadelphia released him from his player contract and immediately hired him as a pitching coach within its player-development system.
The move allows the organization to retain his experience while giving Peluse an opportunity to help develop younger pitchers.
Selected out of Wake Forest, Peluse built experience as both a starter and reliever during his time in professional baseball.
Although he never made his MLB debut, his years of working through the minor leagues give him valuable insight into the challenges young pitchers face while trying to reach the majors.
The transition is an unusual one, but it could prove beneficial for both sides. Rather than continuing his playing career elsewhere after being released, Peluse will begin coaching immediately with the organization he joined as a player.
His experience could become especially useful as the Phillies continue working to strengthen and develop their pitching depth throughout the farm system.
