The Atlanta Braves are facing the Philadelphia Phillies in a crucial MLB series as the regular season enters its final stretch.
With Labor Day marking another important point on the schedule, the end of the minor-league season is also quickly approaching, prompting Atlanta to make a roster adjustment involving former New York Yankees pitcher Ian Hamilton.
The Gwinnett Stripers, Atlanta’s Triple-A affiliate, announced Monday that Hamilton had been placed on the temporary inactive list.
The 31-year-old right-hander signed with the Braves last December and has spent most of the 2026 campaign in the minor leagues, making only a brief appearance at the MLB level.
Hamilton has been highly effective for Gwinnett this season. In 37.2 innings, he has recorded a 2.63 ERA, nine saves and 43 strikeouts.
The temporary inactive designation generally allows a minor-league team to remove a player from its active roster for a short period because of personal matters, family obligations or workload management without releasing him.
Hamilton previously spent five seasons with the Yankees from 2023 through 2025. During his time in New York, he appeared in 135.2 innings and posted a 3.45 ERA with 152 strikeouts.
At the major-league level this season, Hamilton has thrown just 4.2 innings and surrendered four earned runs.
Over his seven-year MLB career, he has produced a 3.72 ERA across 155 innings and has established himself as a reliable bullpen option.
With the Braves already possessing considerable depth in their bullpen, Hamilton faces an uphill battle for a major-league opportunity.
His placement on the temporary inactive list also creates uncertainty over whether he will return before the minor-league season concludes.
