The New York Mets have claimed Christian Cairo off waivers from the Philadelphia Phillies, officially ending his time in the Phillies organization. The move was recorded on September 15, 2026, after Philadelphia designated Cairo for assignment two days earlier, on September 13.
Mets Move Quickly After Phillies DFA
Cairo, 25, had spent most of the 2026 season with the Phillies’ Triple-A affiliate, the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. He was capable of playing several positions, including shortstop, second base, third base and the outfield, giving him considerable defensive versatility.

New York Makes Its Move
Rather than allowing Cairo to remain available on waivers, the Mets put in a successful claim and added him to their organization. This was not a trade between Philadelphia and New York — the Mets simply claimed him through the waiver process after Philadelphia designated him for assignment.

Cairo Immediately Sent to Syracuse
After claiming him, New York optioned Cairo to Triple-A Syracuse on September 15. So, yes, he is now a Mets organization player, but he is currently assigned to Syracuse rather than the Mets’ major-league roster.
A New Chapter After Philadelphia
Cairo joined Philadelphia on a minor-league contract in December 2025 and spent much of this season at Lehigh Valley. His departure is therefore a genuine organizational change: Phillies → designated for assignment → Mets waiver claim → Syracuse Mets. The entire sequence happened between September 13 and September 15, 2026.
