MAJOR-SETBACK: Injured Infielder Lands On IL, Leaving His Future With The Cardinals In Doubt.

The St. Louis Cardinals have placed an infielder on the injured list due to a right hamstring strain, though the team isn’t overly concerned about the injury. According to Katie Woo of The Athletic, the Cardinals don’t expect the player to miss much time but decided to place him on the IL to ensure infield depth.

With a short roster, the team wasn’t comfortable going without a player for 4-5 days, so Thomas Saggese has been called up to provide bench support.

This move is retroactive to April 2. Saggese, who will serve as bench depth, was recalled as part of the transaction.

The infielder has faced challenges in 2024, struggling through a limited 107-game season. However, the Cardinals remain hopeful about his potential. After making his MLB debut in 2022, he showed promise with power, although other areas of his game needed improvement.

In 2023, he hit 27 home runs and posted a career-high .805 OPS, but his .236 batting average and .328 OBP revealed areas for growth. In 2024, he has slashed .203/.271/.400/.671 with 19 home runs, leaving both him and the team wanting more.

As the Cardinals enter a rebuilding phase, the player’s future with the team is now uncertain. Just a few years ago, his spot seemed secure, but now his role with the club heading into 2025 is in question. With his inconsistent performance, he could be considered a trade candidate. However, the Cardinals haven’t given up on him yet. If he returns from injury and performs well, he could still have a place in St. Louis’ long-term plans. With team control through 2028, the Cardinals have the luxury of patience, but he will need to prove he’s a key player worth keeping.
