The Atlanta Braves have decided to part ways with former National League MVP Andrew McCutchen, making the veteran outfielder one of several roster casualties just a day after the MLB trade deadline.
Among three notable roster moves, McCutchen’s departure drew the most attention given his decorated career.
According to the Minor League Baseball transaction log, Atlanta released McCutchen from the minor league contract he signed in July after the Texas Rangers let him go.
During his stint with Texas, the five-time All-Star struggled offensively, batting .192 with a .277 on-base percentage and a .260 slugging percentage across 83 plate appearances.
Despite those struggles, the 39-year-old showed flashes of power after joining Triple-A Gwinnett, collecting 10 hits in 30 at-bats while belting three home runs over 32 plate appearances.
McCutchen had also remained a productive hitter during his final two seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates from 2023 through 2024, though he was used primarily as a designated hitter.
While Atlanta has moved on, McCutchen could still attract interest from another organization looking for veteran depth.
A reunion with the Pirates would provide a fitting final chapter to his accomplished career, but no reports have connected him to Pittsburgh as of Tuesday.
Along with releasing McCutchen, the Braves also parted ways with left-handed pitcher Austin Gomber and veteran outfielder Ben Gamel.
