The Texas Rangers have placed first baseman Jake Burger on the 10-day injured list due to a left oblique strain, the team announced Saturday.
In response, the Rangers have recalled rookie first baseman Justin Foscue from Triple-A Round Rock.
Burger, 29, experienced tightness in his left side after a swinging strikeout during the seventh inning of Friday’s 6-2 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates.
“I was optimistic it might just be a cramp,” Burger said. “I’ve had this before and recovered quickly. I’m aiming to be back on the 11th day, but I’ll listen to my body and work closely with the medical staff.”
In 65 games this season, Burger has a .220 batting average with 10 home runs, 29 RBIs, and ranks second on the team with 13 doubles. Over his career, he has hit .246 with 82 home runs and 214 RBIs across 409 games with the White Sox, Marlins, and Rangers.
He previously missed time with similar injuries, including an intercostal strain in 2023 with Miami and a mild oblique issue in 2023 with Chicago.
Foscue, 26, returns after a brief stint with Texas last year, during which he went 2-for-42 with one RBI in 15 games. The 2020 first-round pick has been productive at Triple-A this season, batting .269 with 10 homers and 37 RBIs over 50 games.
Manager Bruce Bochy also mentioned infielder Ezequiel Duran, who’s hitting .143 in limited action, as a candidate to fill in at first base.
“I’d like to give Zeke more opportunities,” Bochy said. “He’s been making adjustments and could be a solid option for us at first.”
