The Chicago Blackhawks have been active recently, extending Ryan Donato’s contract and acquiring Andre Burakovsky from the Seattle Kraken.
With the NHL Draft just around the corner, most teams are likely slowing down their trade activity—but the Blackhawks may want to make one more big move before the draft begins.
Buffalo Sabres forward JJ Peterka, coming off his entry-level contract, is reportedly on the trade block. At 23, he’s seeking a new deal, and according to The Fourth Period, Chicago is among several teams showing interest, along with the Canucks, Rangers, Blue Jackets, and Lightning.
While Buffalo may not be keen on stockpiling more prospects or picks, the Blackhawks could have what it takes to make a deal happen. Veterans like forward Lukas Reichel and defenseman Connor Murphy—both in the final year of their contracts—could appeal to the Sabres.

Murphy would provide experience on the blue line, while Reichel might benefit from a change of scenery.
Adding those two players along with Chicago’s second first-round pick in the 2025 draft could form an enticing package for Peterka. Some proposed trades have included the Blackhawks’ No. 3 overall pick, but that might be too steep of a price.
Peterka, who’s improved every season, tallied 27 goals and 68 points last year after posting 28 goals and 50 points the year before. He’s exactly the kind of top-six winger Chicago needs. While trades for bounce-back candidates like Burakovsky are smart, acquiring Peterka would be a more impactful move for the Blackhawks’ long-term plans.
