The Philadelphia Phillies are bringing back a familiar face to their pitching organization, re-signing veteran right-hander Lou Trivino to a minor league contract just days after he elected free agency.
The move gives Philadelphia another experienced arm to work with as the club continues managing its pitching depth following the trade deadline.
Trivino has already spent time with the organization and knows the Phillies’ system, making the reunion a relatively low-risk move for a team looking for experienced bullpen options.
Trivino’s return comes after a brief and complicated stretch with Philadelphia.
The Phillies designated the 34-year-old reliever for assignment on Aug. 3 after activating him from the injured list, and he subsequently cleared waivers before electing free agency on Aug. 5.
His departure appeared to close the door on his latest stint with the organization, but Philadelphia has now quickly reversed course by signing him back to a minor league deal.
The veteran has been familiar with the Phillies since signing with the organization in 2025, when he initially worked his way back toward the majors through Triple-A Lehigh Valley.
He also returned to Philadelphia on a minor league contract in February 2026 and eventually reached the majors again, with the club selecting his contract on June 30.
Trivino was later placed on the 15-day injured list with a right thoracic muscle spasm, creating another interruption in his season.
For Philadelphia, the reunion is primarily about adding depth rather than immediately handing Trivino a major role.
The Phillies have been dealing with a demanding pitching workload and continue to need reliable options capable of moving between Triple-A and the major-league bullpen.
Trivino’s seven-year MLB experience gives the organization a pitcher who has already handled high-pressure situations and understands the demands of a major-league bullpen.
If he can get healthy and regain his effectiveness, the Phillies could once again have the option of calling on him when their pitching staff needs reinforcements.
