The New York Yankees missed their chance to acquire Juan Soto and are in urgent need of adding high-caliber talent around Aaron Judge to make another World Series run.
While the addition of Max Fried on Tuesday was a positive step, the team still has gaps to address, particularly in their lineup. The Yankees could benefit from acquiring a versatile infielder, a strong outfielder, and a power-hitting first baseman.
Although there were strong rumors linking the Yankees to St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, Arenado did not include New York on the list of teams he’d consider waiving his no-trade clause for.
An alternative option would be Alex Bregman, the free-agent third baseman from the Houston Astros. While costly, Bregman is expected to sign a lucrative deal, with estimates projecting a four-year, $119 million contract that could approach $200 million as negotiations progress.
Houston has made strong efforts to retain Bregman, but the Yankees and Boston Red Sox are also in pursuit, making it unlikely the Astros can outbid their competitors.
If the Yankees were to sign Bregman, they could shift Jazz Chisholm Jr. to second base, allowing Bregman to man third. Despite a history of bad blood between Bregman and the Yankees, his potential contribution to the team’s success could help fans move past those tensions.
