It’s no surprise that the New York Yankees are eyeing another pitcher ahead of the trade deadline.
If they feel they need an ace-level starter, don’t be surprised if they make a move sooner rather than later. Acquiring a player in the near future would give the Yankees time to assess their needs heading into the All-Star break, which is something the front office should take into account.
Several pitchers could be available for the Yankees to pursue, one of whom is Luis Castillo of the Seattle Mariners, a team known for looking to shed salary.
In a Bleacher Report live stream, Tyler Ward suggested a potential deal to send Castillo to the Yankees in exchange for a package that includes Spencer Jones.

“Without Gerrit Cole and with a rotation hampered by injuries this year, adding Castillo to head the rotation alongside Max Fried and Carlos Rodon would form a solid 1-2-3 punch. This is a significant improvement after concerns arose when Gerrit went down with the inevitable Tommy John surgery,” Ward said.
“And for the Mariners, what’s in it for them? They finally receive a worthwhile trade package, including key prospects like Spencer Jones.”
Castillo Aware of Potential Trade
Luis Castillo has been the subject of trade rumors for the past few months.
The New York Yankees, along with other MLB teams interested in him, are fully aware of the possibility. However, until the Seattle Mariners decide whether to trade him, Castillo remains in control with a no-trade clause. The right-hander, who’s posted a 3.00 ERA early in the season, could block any potential deal if he chooses not to be traded.
“I didn’t have a huge reaction. I still have my no-trade clause in my contract. But if the team approaches me with a negotiation, who knows what could happen? It’s not the first time my name has come up in trade rumors,” Castillo explained, as quoted by Daniel Kramer of MLB.com. “It’s nice to spend time with one team and form a family. I’ve been with the Mariners for three years now, and having control over my future is really important.”
Is Trading Jones the Right Move?
If the Yankees decide to move on from Spencer Jones, it would suggest they no longer see a long-term future for him.
However, Castillo’s talent makes him an attractive trade target, even if Jones improves his performance in the minors. After a rough 2024 season in Double-A, during which he struck out 200 times, Jones has lost some of his luster as a top prospect.
The Yankees had made Jones untouchable just a year ago, but their stance has clearly shifted. Holding onto prospects for too long has hurt them in the past, and trading Jones for a proven talent like Castillo could be a smart move.
