Bryce Harper made it clear that if the Philadelphia Phillies wanted to strengthen their World Series chances, he was willing to do whatever it took—including switching positions.
After publicly urging team president Dave Dombrowski to improve the roster, Harper followed up with a text saying he would move from first base back to right field if it helped the club land another impact bat before the trade deadline.
That willingness paid off when Philadelphia acquired three-time batting champion Luis Arraez from the San Francisco Giants.
Harper shifted to right field for the remainder of the season, while Arraez took over at second base. The move also reshaped the Phillies’ infield, with Bryson Stott sliding to third base and Alec Bohm moving across the diamond to first.
Harper, who had been playing first base since returning from Tommy John surgery in 2023, acknowledged that returning to the outfield would require some adjustment, particularly with throwing and conditioning.
Still, the 33-year-old emphasized that helping the team win was his only priority and said he was happy to make the sacrifice if it improved the Phillies’ championship hopes.
Interim manager Don Mattingly confirmed there was never any discussion about moving shortstop Trea Turner despite his defensive struggles, instead relying on Harper’s flexibility.
Mattingly said he wanted to ensure Harper was fully committed to the transition, and Harper quickly assured him that he was.
Bryson Stott praised Harper’s selflessness, noting that if a two-time MVP was willing to change positions for the benefit of the team, everyone else should be willing to do the same.
Harper even brought his outfielder’s glove on a recent road trip in anticipation that such a move could happen after he openly stated the Phillies needed roster reinforcements.
Although Harper admitted he enjoys playing first base, he stressed that returning to right field was a temporary move made solely to help the team.
He believed the position switch allowed the Phillies to acquire the player they needed in Arraez, who has established himself as one of baseball’s premier contact hitters and is regarded as one of the league’s strongest defensive second basemen this season.
Mattingly compared Arraez’s elite bat-to-ball skills to Hall of Famers Tony Gwynn and Wade Boggs, calling him a hitter who simply “always hits.” Entering Monday’s game against the Washington Nationals, the Phillies sat at 59-53, occupying one of the National League’s final Wild Card spots while trailing the Atlanta Braves by eight games in the NL East.
