The New York Giants have made notable strides in improving their roster despite the tough challenge faced by GM Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll earlier this year. However, this success could lead to some veteran cuts following training camp.
One player who may be on the chopping block is running back Devin Singletary, a former favorite of Daboll’s from their time together in Buffalo. According to Pro Football Network, Singletary’s release is considered a “plausible outcome” after the Giants drafted Cam Skattebo from Arizona State in the fourth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Singletary, who was signed as a temporary starter after Saquon Barkley’s departure, struggled to make an impact in his first season with the Giants. He finished with a career-low 437 rushing yards, and rookie Tyrone Tracy Jr. quickly moved ahead of him on the depth chart. Now, with the addition of Skattebo, Singletary’s role seems even more uncertain. While Skattebo’s pre-draft concerns about his speed and contact-heavy playing style persist, he’s viewed as a polished prospect capable of contributing across all three downs, which makes Singletary’s future with the team even more tenuous.

Adding to Singletary’s challenges is his lack of special teams value — he’s only played 23 special teams snaps in his six-year career. Moreover, his contract structure means the Giants can move on from him with minimal financial consequences. After June 1, they could save $1.5 million in cap space by releasing him, though that’s not a significant amount. Still, if Singletary falls to RB3 after training camp, cutting him might make sense to free up resources for potential roster moves later in the season.
Singletary’s contract, which guarantees $9.5 million and has a total value of $16.5 million, would ensure he at least reaches minicamp and likely training camp in 2025. However, if he doesn’t perform, he could be a pre-free agency cut in 2026, saving the Giants $5.25 million in cap space.
