The St. Louis Cardinals are turning to one of their top young arms for help, recalling right-handed pitcher Michael McGreevy from Triple-A Memphis, according to The Athletic. McGreevy has yet to pitch in the majors this season.
To clear space on the roster, the Cardinals have optioned fellow right-hander Roddery Muñoz back to Memphis. Muñoz had just recently been promoted but will now return to the minors.
McGreevy learned about his promotion in an amusing moment. According to MLB.com’s John Denton, the pitcher had just finished watching the Marvel movie Thunderbolts on Friday night when he got word of his call-up. He packed up his gear at AutoZone Park and made the drive to St. Louis early Saturday.
The move comes as the Cardinals continue to search for stability in a rocky season. Entering Saturday’s matchup against the New York Mets, the team held a 14-19 record and trailed by six games in the NL Central.
St. Louis is struggling in multiple areas, particularly in its pitching staff. Ranked 27th in the majors in strikeouts, the team has struggled to generate dominance on the mound. Their ERA ranks a bit better, sitting 20th league-wide.
McGreevy may help provide a spark. The 2024 season saw him post a 3-0 record with a 1.96 ERA across four MLB appearances. This year in Triple-A, he’s 3-1 with a 4.08 ERA. The 23-year-old is regarded as one of the organization’s top overall prospects.
Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol praised McGreevy during spring training, noting his precision and work ethic. “He’s doing exactly what we hoped—pounding the zone and keeping hitters on the ground,” Marmol said. “He added some muscle in the offseason and looked strong this spring. I’m excited to see what he brings.”
As the Cardinals continue to search for answers, McGreevy’s promotion could be a key step toward stabilizing their pitching rotation. The team faced the 22-11 Mets on Saturday at 2:15 ET.
