Cards Boost: Louisville Cardinals Sign Oklahoma Tight End to Bolster Tight End Postion

Davon Mitchell, a former top high school recruit who spent last season at the University of Oklahoma, has officially transferred to the University of Louisville football program, head coach Jeff Brohm announced on Wednesday.

His addition marks another significant pickup for the Cardinals as they continue to reshape their roster through the transfer portal.

Mitchell is now the third tight end to transfer to Louisville during the NCAA’s spring transfer window and the ninth transfer addition overall for the Cardinals this cycle.

His arrival not only strengthens Louisville’s depth at the tight end position but also reflects the program’s continued focus on acquiring high-upside talent from across the country.

Standing 6-foot-3 and weighing 260 pounds, Mitchell brings impressive physical tools to the table, even though he did not see game action during his lone season at Oklahoma.

Despite the lack of playing time, he arrives in Louisville with a strong reputation as a pass-catching tight end with high developmental potential. As a high school recruit, Mitchell was considered one of the most coveted prospects in the country.

The 247Sports Composite ranked him as the No. 154 overall player nationally, and he received scholarship offers from powerhouse programs such as Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State, Notre Dame, Oregon, Tennessee, Texas, and USC — a list that speaks to his upside and perceived value coming out of high school.

Originally from Los Alamitos, California, Mitchell was initially a member of the Class of 2025 but made headlines when he chose to reclassify to the Class of 2024.

This decision allowed him to graduate early and enroll at Oklahoma ahead of schedule, signaling both his academic preparedness and eagerness to begin competing at the collegiate level.

While he didn’t make it onto the field for the Sooners, the early start gave him valuable time to adjust to the demands of a Division I football program.

Now with a fresh start at Louisville, Mitchell will look to make an impact in Brohm’s offensive system, which has historically featured tight ends in versatile roles.

With his size, athleticism, and recruiting pedigree, Mitchell could quickly become a key contributor for the Cardinals, especially as the program works to reload talent and compete at the top of the ACC.

The move also reflects Louisville’s strategic use of the transfer portal to bolster key positions with players who have both high ceilings and untapped potential.

For Mitchell, Louisville offers a second chance to fulfill the promise he showed as a prep star — and for Brohm and his staff, it’s another opportunity to mold elite-level talent into on-field production.
