Tensions between the Philadelphia Phillies and franchise superstar Bryce Harper appear to be growing this offseason, with baseball executive Dave Dombrowski reportedly diminishing Harper’s trade value, raising speculation that the star could eventually ask for a move out of Philadelphia.
If that happens, some analysts believe the Phillies could explore a shocking trade with the Pittsburgh Pirates to acquire top prospect Konnor Griffin, a highly unlikely but intriguing blockbuster scenario that could benefit both organizations.

In the proposed deal, the Phillies would part ways with their franchise cornerstone but gain a potential generational talent in return.

Griffin has shown promising form in Spring Training, posting a .214/.267/.857 slash line with three home runs and six RBIs, while his 2025 minor league season was even more impressive, beginning in Low-A and advancing to Double-A, where he hit .333 with 23 doubles, 21 home runs, 94 RBIs, and 65 stolen bases across 122 games.

The trade would also significantly reduce Philadelphia’s payroll burden, especially since Griffin is projected to sign a long-term contract worth around 10 years and $130 million if the Phillies choose to extend him early.
Despite the potential upside, the Pirates are unlikely to agree to the move because of Harper’s massive contract and the historical reluctance to send the top prospect in baseball to a division rival. Still, if Philadelphia could overcome those obstacles, the controversial swap could shock fans but might ultimately reshape the franchise’s future.
