It initially seemed like the Tennessee Lady Vols had endured the worst of their offseason setbacks, but a final and particularly painful development delivered another major blow. Head coach Kim Caldwell had put significant effort into recruiting five-star forward Oliviyah Edwards—ranked No. 5 nationally by 247Sports—and the 6-foot-3 standout was widely viewed as a cornerstone addition for the program.
However, following a wave of roster changes this offseason, Edwards ultimately reopened her recruitment and has now announced her commitment to South Carolina, joining Dawn Staley and the defending powerhouse Gamecocks. The decision keeps her in the SEC, meaning Tennessee will now have to face one of its former targets multiple times a year rather than benefit from her presence.

The loss is especially difficult given Edwards’ elite skill set and two-way impact. She brings a rare combination of size, athleticism, and interior dominance, excelling as a rebounder and efficient finisher around the rim—qualities that would have immediately elevated Tennessee’s frontcourt.
Despite the setback, Kim Caldwell has worked to reshape the roster with players who fit her system, which emphasizes perimeter shooting and aggressive full-court pressure. The staff has added multiple capable shooters who can stretch defenses and compete at a high level.
Still, missing out on a talent like Edwards is a tough pill to swallow for the Lady Vols. While Tennessee will continue building forward, the sting remains as they prepare for the challenge of facing her—and South Carolina—on the court next season.
