The New York Mets have gotten off to an unexpectedly poor start to the season, with a combination of injuries and underwhelming performance contributing to their struggles. Despite growing frustration and speculation about manager Carlos Mendoza’s job security, team president of baseball operations David Stearns has publicly confirmed that Mendoza will remain in charge for now.
The biggest issue for New York has been its offense, which currently ranks at the bottom of the league in nearly every major category, including runs scored, on-base percentage, and slugging. Advanced metrics also show the lineup struggling, with only Juan Soto and Francisco Álvarez posting above-average production when healthy regulars are considered.

Because of the offensive slump, trade ideas have begun circulating, including a potential move for Houston Astros first baseman Christian Walker. Walker is off to a strong start offensively and is also regarded as an elite defender with multiple Gold Gloves, making him a possible fit for a Mets team in need of stability at first base.
While New York’s season is still salvageable, pressure is building for the front office to act quickly, especially given Walker’s sizable contract and the cost it would take to acquire him in a trade.
