The Philadelphia Phillies have been playing much better baseball recently as they try to recover from a sluggish start and re-enter the playoff race. After what was arguably one of the worst openings in the majors, the team appears to have found new life following a managerial change from Rob Thomson. Although Thomson previously guided the club to a World Series appearance after taking over in 2022, the decision to move in a different direction was seen as necessary at the time.
Since then, Don Mattingly has steadied the ship as interim manager, but the biggest factor behind the turnaround has been improved performance on the field. The starting rotation has met expectations with strong outings, and the offense has also begun producing more consistently.
Even with that progress, the Phillies still have clear areas to address, particularly the need for another impact right-handed bat in the lineup.
Because of that, MLB discussions have already linked Philadelphia to major trade possibilities, including Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout. With the Angels struggling again and trending toward selling, Trout has emerged as a potential trade candidate despite his massive contract and injury history in recent seasons.
The veteran star has been healthy and productive in 2026, and with several years remaining on his deal, Los Angeles may consider moving him if the right offer comes along. For the Phillies, he would instantly address their struggles against left-handed pitching and provide a major boost from the right side of the plate.
Although his contract is expensive, it’s expected the Angels would likely absorb part of it in any deal, making him a realistic — if ambitious — target for Philadelphia as they look to strengthen their lineup for a postseason push.
