The North Carolina Tar Heels added another important piece to their future secondary on Friday, securing a commitment from Texas defensive back Trey Johnson.
The talented 2027 prospect chose UNC over several Power Four programs, giving Bill Belichick and his coaching staff another recruiting win as they continue building momentum on the trail.
Johnson, a standout from Steele High School in Cibolo, Texas, has quickly emerged as one of the rising defensive backs in his class.
At 6-foot-2 and nearly 190 pounds, he brings impressive size, athleticism and versatility to the position.
His recruitment picked up steam over the past year, with schools such as Arizona State, Baylor, Houston and Texas Tech all extending offers before UNC ultimately won out.
One of the biggest reasons behind Johnson’s commitment was the strong relationship he developed with North Carolina defensive backs coach Armond Hawkins.
UNC first offered Johnson earlier this year, and the coaching staff stayed aggressive in its pursuit. According to reports, Hawkins recently conducted an in-home visit that helped seal the deal for the Tar Heels.

Even more impressive is the fact that Johnson committed without taking an official visit to Chapel Hill. The vision laid out by Belichick and his staff, along with the consistent communication from the program, made a major impact on the Texas native.
Johnson said the coaching staff’s plan for the future of UNC football played a huge role in his decision.

Johnson now becomes one of the early cornerstones of UNC’s 2027 recruiting class, joining a growing group of prospects buying into the program’s long-term direction.
With his size, physical tools and upside in the secondary, the Tar Heels believe they landed a defensive back who could eventually develop into a major contributor in Chapel Hill.
