The New York Mets are set to shake up their rotation once again as David Peterson’s struggles continue, leading to his demotion to the bullpen, according to Anthony DiComo of MLB.com.
DiComo reported that Peterson will move into a relief role beginning Sunday, while fellow left-hander Sean Manaea is expected to step into his place in the rotation or bulk pitching mix for the upcoming series finale against the Marlins, potentially working behind an opener as the team has done previously.
The decision comes amid a turbulent season for the Mets’ starting rotation, which has been hit hard by injuries and inconsistency. Two starters from Opening Day are already sidelined, and Peterson becomes the latest arm to lose his rotation spot as the team searches for stability.

Peterson’s demotion marks a dramatic fall for a pitcher who was an All-Star in 2025 after posting a strong campaign, but who has since struggled with command issues, elevated walks, and inconsistent results that carried into a rough start in 2026.

With the rotation still under pressure, the Mets continue to search for answers, relying on a mix of struggling veterans, young arms, and impending returns from injury, hoping to finally stabilize a group that has yet to find a reliable rhythm this season.
