Despite a rough June that saw them finish with a losing record, the Atlanta Braves continue to hold first place in the NL East and appear to be regaining momentum after securing their first series win since June against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
With the MLB trade deadline approaching, Atlanta is widely expected to be active in the market. General manager Alex Anthopoulos recently indicated that the club plans to explore potential upgrades if it remains in contention.
One of the Braves’ most pressing needs is starting pitching. While Chris Sale has anchored the rotation, the rest of the staff has struggled to provide consistent results throughout the season, increasing the likelihood that Atlanta pursues one or more starters before the deadline.
Analysts have pointed to the rotation as the team’s biggest concern, noting that what was once viewed as a strength has become a major question mark. As a result, the front office is expected to prioritize pitching help in the coming weeks.
Among the names connected to Atlanta is veteran right-hander Sonny Gray. The experienced starter has long been viewed as a potential fit for the Braves and could once again emerge as a trade target.
Gray remains one of baseball’s most effective veterans thanks to his deep pitch mix, strong command, and ability to keep hitters off balance. Although his velocity has declined with age, he continues to rely on movement, deception, and pitch sequencing to generate success.
A three-time All-Star and former Cy Young Award runner-up, Gray would give Atlanta another proven arm to pair with Sale at the top of the rotation. The veteran is currently playing under a $75 million contract and could provide the stability the Braves are seeking for a postseason push.

If the Braves are unable to acquire higher-profile targets such as Tarik Skubal, Gray could emerge as one of their top alternatives as the trade deadline draws closer.
