Luis Arráez would be a natural offensive fit for the Phillies, even though he bats left-handed. A three-time batting champion, Arráez is currently leading the majors with a .328 average.
While he doesn’t provide much home run power, he excels at making consistent contact, striking out just 20 times while drawing 25 walks this season.
His elite bat-to-ball skills would strengthen Philadelphia’s lineup, likely earning him a spot near the top of the batting order under interim manager Don Mattingly.
Defensively, Arráez has long been viewed as a player without a permanent position, but he has made notable strides at second base this year.
After insisting on returning to the position when he signed a one-year, $12 million contract with the Giants, he has posted improved defensive metrics under the guidance of Ron Washington.
That marks a significant turnaround from his previous struggles at second base, where poor defensive numbers eventually led to a move to first base during his time with the Padres.
If the Phillies were to acquire Arráez, they would likely install him as their everyday second baseman, especially since trading for him without honoring his preferred position could create unnecessary tension.
Such a move would likely shift Bryson Stott to third base, potentially leaving Alec Bohm as either a trade candidate or a high-priced reserve.
However, Philadelphia’s infield alignment remains fluid due to Trea Turner’s defensive struggles at shortstop, creating several possible configurations if Arráez were added.
Another factor is Bryce Harper’s willingness to temporarily return to right field if it helps the Phillies acquire an impact infielder or first baseman.
While Arráez isn’t a traditional power-hitting first baseman, his offensive consistency could make him attractive enough for the Phillies to consider reshaping their defense.
If president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski decides Arráez is the right addition, Harper may be willing to adjust positions once again in an effort to strengthen the club’s chances of making a deep postseason run.
