The St. Louis Cardinals began the season hoping to give former top prospect Jordan Walker significant playing time to assess his long-term role with the team.
However, things haven’t gone his way—he’s landed on the injured list for a second time and has been overtaken by the red-hot Alec Burleson in the lineup.
Walker recently joined the team in Pittsburgh for a medical evaluation but won’t be eligible to return until Friday.
According to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, he’s not expected to be activated immediately and will likely head out on a rehab assignment to regain strength after his recovery from his injuries.
Once seen as the franchise’s future star, Walker has struggled to meet expectations and is now fighting to reclaim his place.
While he’s improved defensively in the outfield, adjusting from his original position due to Nolan Arenado’s presence, his offense has dipped—batting just .210 with three home runs in a season that many saw as critical for his development.
