Missouri football has added another piece to its backfield through the transfer portal, securing a commitment from Montana running back Va’aimalae “Malae” Fonoti. As the portal window winds down, head coach Eli Drinkwitz and his staff remained active, targeting depth and competition at the running back position with a proven FCS contributor.
Fonoti comes to Columbia after a productive stretch with the Montana Grizzlies, where he played a role in the program’s run to the FCS playoff semifinals. This past season, he recorded 48 rushing attempts for 184 yards and four touchdowns, showing efficiency and toughness in limited carries. He also made an impact in the passing game, hauling in 10 receptions for 97 yards, underscoring his versatility as a dual-threat back.

The Hawaii native gained national attention earlier in his college career when he earned Big Sky Offensive Player of the Week honors as a freshman during the 2024 season, highlighted by a standout performance against Morehead State. His combination of downhill running, pass-catching ability, and experience in a winning program made him an attractive portal target for Missouri’s staff.
Fonoti chose Mizzou over offers from Hawaii and Big 12 program Utah. He becomes Missouri’s 20th overall transfer portal addition and the second running back pickup, joining Houston Christian transfer Xai’Shaun Edwards. Fonoti will enter a deep and competitive running back room that already includes Ahmad Hardy, Jamal Roberts, Edwards, and incoming freshman Maxwell Warner, giving Missouri added flexibility and depth heading into the upcoming season.
