“Texas reloads fast.”: Rangers Make Shocking Roster Move, Landing Former San Diego Padres Arm in Bold Bid to Reinforce Pitching Staff After Injury Setbacks

The Texas Rangers are making adjustments to their pitching staff following multiple injury setbacks.

On Wednesday, relievers Chris Martin and Luis Curvelo were placed on the 15-day injured list, creating openings on the roster. To help fill those spots, the team promoted right-hander Gavin Collyer and added a veteran arm with starting experience.

According to MLB.com’s Kennedi Landry, the Rangers called up 31-year-old Cal Quantrill, a seven-year MLB veteran who spent time with the Miami Marlins and Atlanta Braves last season.

While primarily a starting pitcher, Quantrill is expected to contribute out of the bullpen for Texas.

Quantrill had recently made three starts at Triple-A Round Rock after signing a minor league deal with the Rangers last September. In those outings, opponents hit just .212 against him, though he allowed eight earned runs over 14 innings.

Originally drafted by the New York Yankees in 2013, Quantrill instead chose to play college baseball at Stanford before being selected eighth overall by the San Diego Padres in the 2016 MLB Draft. He made his major league debut in 2019.

Over his career, Quantrill has appeared in 187 games, including 149 starts, posting a 4.35 ERA while averaging 6.7 strikeouts per nine innings.
