Nobody Expected This Move: Who Could Be the Organization’s Next Hidden Gem, After Dominating Independent Baseball With 125 RBIs, This Powerful Infielder Is Finally Getting His Shot With the Mets

The New York Mets have added a promising offensive talent to the organization by acquiring 26-year-old utility player Taylor Darden from the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs of the Atlantic League.

Capable of playing second base, third base, and left field, Darden earned attention with his impressive production in independent baseball.

Darden began his collegiate career at Incarnate Word before finishing at McNeese State. After turning professional, he joined the Boise Hawks in 2025 and delivered a standout season, batting .429 with 18 home runs and 125 RBIs.

Despite those remarkable numbers, he did not receive an affiliated opportunity and returned to independent baseball with Southern Maryland.

His strong offensive performance continued with the Blue Crabs, where he hit .314 with seven home runs and 53 RBIs in just 46 games.

That production convinced the Mets to acquire his rights and bring him into their farm system.

Following the transaction, New York assigned Darden to the Brooklyn Cyclones, the club’s High-A affiliate.

Although he is beginning his affiliated career at the High-A level, his age and offensive track record could allow him to move quickly through the organization if he maintains his current form.

Meanwhile, the Mets could soon welcome a major reinforcement to their big-league roster as star shortstop Francisco Lindor nears a return from his rehab assignment.

Manager Carlos Mendoza said the team plans to evaluate Lindor’s readiness after Sunday, relying on the veteran’s assessment of both his physical condition and need for additional at-bats.

Lindor’s return would provide a significant boost to a Mets team fighting to remain in the playoff race.

Mendoza emphasized the impact Lindor has on the club, citing his leadership, presence, and all-around talent as factors that elevate the entire roster.

As for the upcoming trade deadline, the Mets’ direction remains uncertain. Despite sitting near the bottom of the NL East standings, MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo believes the organization is more likely to hold onto its current roster rather than sell off veterans for modest returns.

Unless another team presents an overwhelming offer for one of New York’s key players, the Mets may opt to keep their core intact and make a final push toward postseason contention.
