While Atlanta has remained among the National League’s top teams despite a lengthy list of injuries, the club’s biggest concern remains its starting rotation rather than its potent lineup.
The Braves are anchored by ace Chris Sale, but questions linger behind him. Bryce Elder has led a group of inconsistent starters, and there is uncertainty surrounding whether Spencer Strider and Spencer Schwellenbach will return at full strength this season.
Braves general manager Alex Anthopoulos has acknowledged the team’s interest in adding a proven starter before the postseason, creating a potential opportunity for Toronto.
Veteran right-hander Kevin Gausman stands out as a natural trade candidate. The 35-year-old is playing out the final season of his contract and brings valuable postseason experience after helping the Blue Jays during last year’s World Series run.
Although Gausman has struggled in 2026, posting a 4.51 ERA and enduring a difficult stretch since early June, advanced metrics paint a more encouraging picture.
His 3.67 FIP suggests his performance has been affected by poor luck and defensive issues, while he has continued to miss bats with 117 strikeouts in 115.2 innings.
Adding Gausman would likely give Atlanta a dependable No. 2 starter behind Sale for a potential playoff run.
Another possibility is Shane Bieber, who recently reminded teams of his upside by tossing six scoreless innings against the Chicago White Sox.
Like Gausman, Bieber is also on an expiring contract, making him another attractive rental option for contenders.
In return for Gausman, Toronto could seek a package built around two prospects from Atlanta’s top 30, particularly players nearing the major leagues.
One proposed framework would send Gausman to the Braves in exchange for pitching prospect Garrett Baumann and outfielder Patrick Clohisy.
Bieber, given his recent injury history and inconsistent results, would likely command a more modest return, potentially a single prospect from the lower half of Atlanta’s top 30.
Whether the Blue Jays ultimately move Gausman, Bieber, or both, Atlanta appears to be a strong potential destination.
Acquiring an experienced starter could strengthen the Braves’ postseason outlook, while Toronto would add valuable young talent as it begins reshaping its roster for the future.
