Ahead of Saturday night’s game against the New York Yankees, the Philadelphia Phillies made several roster moves, highlighted by the acquisition of outfielder Kameron Misner from the Kansas City Royals in exchange for cash considerations.
The left-handed hitter was immediately optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, while Steward Berroa was designated for assignment to create room on the 40-man roster.
Misner has dominated Triple-A this season, posting a .941 OPS with 14 home runs and 14 stolen bases in 63 games, though he has yet to replicate that production in the majors, where he owns a .206 batting average with five home runs across 97 career games.
Interim manager Don Mattingly, who managed the Marlins when Misner was drafted in the first round in 2019, praised the outfielder’s athleticism and defensive versatility.
While the Phillies continue searching for a right-handed bat ahead of the trade deadline, Misner provides valuable organizational depth and can play all three outfield positions.
His combination of speed, power, and defensive ability gives Philadelphia another option as it evaluates its roster for the stretch run.
The Phillies also strengthened their pitching staff by selecting the contract of right-hander Brian Keller, who was set to make his major league debut after posting a 2.23 ERA in eight Triple-A starts.
Keller’s journey back to professional baseball included Tommy John surgery that sidelined him for the 2024 and 2025 seasons following a brief stint in Japan.
Philadelphia also recalled left-hander Kyle Backhus to bolster a bullpen that has lacked reliable left-handed depth. To make room for the additions, right-handers Max Lazar and top prospect Alex McFarlane were optioned to Triple-A, giving the Phillies more flexibility against the Yankees’ lineup and additional pitching depth moving forward.
