The Atlanta Braves have announced a significant roster update involving veteran catcher Sandy León, who will miss the remainder of the 2026 regular season.
The 37-year-old was placed on the 60-day injured list by Triple-A Gwinnett on Wednesday, effectively ending his season. León had most recently been playing at the minor-league level after being outrighted by Atlanta in June.
León returned to the Braves earlier this season after Atlanta needed additional catching depth because of injuries to its regular catchers.
The veteran originally signed a Major League contract in May after Sean Murphy suffered a fractured left middle finger, giving the Braves an experienced option behind the plate.
León had previously spent time in Atlanta and had last appeared in the majors for the club in 2025.
The 14-year MLB veteran appeared in 21 games for Atlanta this season, but his offensive production was limited.
León has spent his career with several organizations, including the Boston Red Sox, Washington Nationals, Cleveland Guardians, Miami Marlins, Minnesota Twins and Texas Rangers.
One of the highlights of his career came with Boston, when he was part of the Red Sox team that won the 2018 World Series.
For Atlanta, León’s absence is unlikely to dramatically alter the club’s plans, but it removes another experienced catcher from the organization’s depth chart during the stretch run.
The Braves remain atop the NL East at 74-52, although they have gone 4-6 over their last 10 games. After finishing their series with Minnesota, Atlanta is scheduled to begin a series against the Chicago White Sox.
