East Carolina running back Ashton Gray appears to be moving closer to a return after suffering an undisclosed injury during the Pirates’ Week 3 matchup with Old Dominion.
Gray initially stayed on the field after sustaining the injury, but ECU head coach Blake Harrell later revealed that the junior would undergo an MRI to determine the severity of the issue. At that point, there was uncertainty surrounding whether Gray would be available for the Pirates’ next game.
The injury came during a promising beginning to Gray’s first season at East Carolina. Through four games, the running back had carried the ball 32 times for 152 yards, averaging 4.8 yards per attempt while breaking off a 45-yard run.
Gray joined ECU after transferring from North Texas, where he accumulated 383 rushing yards and five touchdowns during his career. His early production had quickly established him as an important part of the Pirates’ offensive plans.
Gray entered the 2026 campaign with considerable expectations. Athlon Sports selected him as a second-team All-American Conference player before the season, while he also earned a spot on the preseason Doak Walker Award watch list.
The award is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back. With his previous experience and ability to make explosive plays, Gray was expected to play a significant role in ECU’s rushing attack.
Now, there is growing optimism surrounding his recovery. Harrell said on September 26 that Gray was getting close to making his return, indicating that the running back has continued to progress since suffering the injury. Although ECU has not publicly revealed the specific nature of the injury, the timing of the Pirates’ bye week could provide Gray with valuable additional recovery time. While he has been sidelined, TJ Engleman has taken on more responsibility in the backfield.
ECU is scheduled to return to action against Rice on October 10, making that matchup a potential target for Gray’s comeback. Still, the Pirates have not officially confirmed that he will be cleared to play, meaning his availability will remain something to watch as the game approaches. If Gray is able to return, ECU would regain an experienced running back who had already shown the ability to contribute early in the season.
