Chaos in the 11th: Francona and Coach Cowgill Ejected, Followed by Suspension, Causing Major Issues for Reds

What began as a tense extra-innings battle between the Cincinnati Reds and Atlanta Braves spiraled into controversy and consequences Thursday night, as Reds manager Terry Francona and first-base coach Collin Cowgill were both ejected and later suspended following heated arguments with umpires over a pivotal call.

The drama unfolded in the top of the 11th inning after a bunt misplay and a contentious call at second base. Blake Dunn, attempting to steal, was ruled out on a tag despite appearing to reach safely. Cowgill erupted over what he claimed was illegal blocking of the base by Braves second baseman Ozzie Albies, prompting his immediate ejection by umpire Alex McKay. Moments later, Francona joined the argument, demanding a clearer explanation of the replay ruling—and was ejected, though he initially didn’t realize it.

Confusion deepened as Francona remained in the dugout for two batters before being officially removed by crew chief Alan Porter. MLB later confirmed that both Francona and Cowgill would serve one-game suspensions for their conduct, citing unsportsmanlike behavior and failure to leave the field promptly after ejection.

The ejections added insult to injury for the Reds, who went on to lose 5–4 in a walk-off and dropped to 0–4 in extra-inning games this season. With key players on the injured list and frustration mounting, the team now faces further strain from the absence of its veteran manager and coaching staff disruption.

“It’s tough losing like that, especially when tempers flare and we make costly mistakes,” said outfielder Blake Dunn. “We’ve got to stay focused and clean it up.”

As the Reds try to recover from a series of close, painful losses, Thursday’s meltdown could be a turning point—or a deeper sign of trouble ahead.
