The Philadelphia Phillies had a rare scheduled day off Friday after opening their series against the Minnesota Twins in Major League Baseball’s Field of Dreams game Thursday night.
Philadelphia made the most of the special occasion, defeating Minnesota 7-1 in Dyersville, Iowa, to get the series started on a strong note.
Despite not having a game on the schedule Friday, the Phillies remained active behind the scenes and made a move to strengthen their pitching depth by signing veteran right-hander Casey Lawrence.
Philadelphia agreed to a minor-league contract with Lawrence, a 38-year-old pitcher who was recently released by the Seattle Mariners.
The transaction gives the Phillies another experienced arm to add to their organizational depth as they approach the final stretch of the regular season.
Lawrence has not appeared in a Major League game during the 2026 campaign and is expected to join Triple-A Lehigh Valley, assuming he has not already reported to the IronPigs.
The move is viewed primarily as an organizational depth addition rather than an immediate Major League roster move.
Lawrence has spent this season pitching at the Triple-A level for Tacoma, where he has recorded a 4.37 ERA across more than 131 innings.
While those numbers are not dominant, his ability to provide innings gives Philadelphia another experienced option in the event of injuries or increased workload concerns among its Major League pitchers.
The Phillies have dealt with instability in their bullpen for much of the season, making additional pitching depth particularly important.
Lawrence’s experience could potentially give the organization another arm to call upon if circumstances change over the final weeks of the campaign.
The veteran right-hander also brings previous Major League experience to Philadelphia. Lawrence has appeared in parts of five MLB seasons and has accumulated 141⅔ innings at the highest level.
His career numbers include a 5-6 record, a 6.42 ERA and 104 strikeouts, meaning his track record does not necessarily suggest that he will immediately become a major contributor to the Phillies’ bullpen.
He originally made his Major League debut with the Toronto Blue Jays at age 29 and has since had multiple stints with both Toronto and Seattle.
Lawrence most recently appeared in the Majors during the 2025 season, when he pitched for both the Blue Jays and Mariners. Across 17⅔ innings, he surrendered 15 runs, eight of which were earned.
Those results likely explain why Philadelphia is treating the signing as a depth move rather than viewing Lawrence as a guaranteed solution to its bullpen problems.
Still, with the season entering an important stage, adding an experienced pitcher on a minor-league deal carries relatively little risk while giving the organization another potential option.
The signing also comes at a time when Philadelphia’s pitching staff has faced considerable pressure. The Phillies have had problems finding consistent production from their bullpen, while injuries and workload concerns have made starting-pitching depth increasingly important.
Lawrence may not immediately receive an opportunity in the Major Leagues, but the Phillies can evaluate him at Triple-A and determine whether he can eventually provide useful innings if the need arises.
For now, Lawrence’s arrival is best viewed as a low-risk organizational move rather than a major roster shake-up. Philadelphia has postseason ambitions and will need as many reliable pitching options as possible as the schedule moves toward October.
If Lawrence performs well with Lehigh Valley, the Phillies could have another veteran arm available should an emergency arise.
However, given his career numbers and lack of MLB appearances this season, the club will likely be cautious about putting him into high-leverage situations unless his performance significantly changes the equation.
