Cardinals Pull Off Quick Trade: All-Star Reliever Ryan Helsley Finally Departs in Blockbuster Deal to Rival Team

With the trade deadline still months away, teams around the league are already eyeing potential upgrades, and one name that continues to surface is St. Louis Cardinals closer Ryan Helsley. The 29-year-old flamethrower has become a top trade target, with USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reporting that Helsley is “likely” to be moved before the July 31 deadline.

Helsley’s impressive track record makes him a sought-after asset, especially for teams like the Phillies and Diamondbacks. Last season, he was dominant, saving an NL-high 49 games with a 2.45 ERA and earning NL Reliever of the Year honors. Known for his 100-mph fastball and a developing sharp curveball, Helsley has been one of the league’s top closers since taking over the role in 2022.

Between 2022 and 2024, Helsley posted a remarkable 1.83 ERA and 83 saves, while striking out nearly 35% of batters faced. His ERA ranked third among qualified relievers during that span, with his FIP sitting fourth and his strikeout rate eighth. For teams in need of a reliable bullpen arm, Helsley provides elite production. With his impending free agency, he is an attractive trade candidate.

Despite interest from teams like the Blue Jays and Diamondbacks earlier this year, the Cardinals resisted trading Helsley. However, with their 12-15 start to the 2025 season and their reluctance to extend him long-term, the team may now be more willing to move him before the deadline.

So far in 2025, Helsley has not matched his previous level of dominance, posting a 4.09 ERA and a WHIP of 1.545 over 11 innings, with 10 strikeouts and 8 walks. Despite this, the trade market is still heating up, with the Phillies reportedly interested due to struggles in their bullpen. The Diamondbacks are also a potential landing spot after missing out on Helsley during the offseason and losing A.J. Puk to injury. However, teams will likely be cautious, with the Phillies ruling out trading top prospects Andrew Painter or Aidan Miller. As the deadline approaches, Helsley’s future in St. Louis remains uncertain, marking a potential shift in the team’s rebuilding efforts.
