Unexpected But Necessary: Top Five-Star Transfer Target Slips Away from NC State, Commits to Kansas State Wildcats!

Earlier this month, first-year NC State basketball coach Will Wade and the Wolfpack appeared to be the clear favorites to land PJ Haggerty, the top-ranked transfer point guard and former Memphis standout.

However, insiders revealed in the past week that NC State recently ceased pursuing the 6-foot-3, 191-pound Haggerty after securing a commitment from another highly regarded portal player, former Texas Tech forward Darrion Williams.

On Monday, Haggerty announced he would be joining the Kansas State Wildcats, a late entrant in the recruitment.

CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander noted on social media that Haggerty’s NIL demands reportedly fell below the $4-5 million range initially rumored earlier this spring.

Haggerty, a redshirt junior with two years of eligibility left, ranks as the No. 2 player in the transfer portal after an impressive season at Memphis, where he averaged 21.7 points, 5.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 1.8 steals, earning AAC Player of the Year honors and consensus All-American status.

Meanwhile, NC State is expected to start former Michigan State guard Tre Holloman as the point guard in Wade’s first season.
