EXCLUSIVE: Florida Defensive Back Aaron Gates Reconsiders Transfer Decision, Set to Return for 2026 Season

Florida has received encouraging news on the roster front as defensive back Aaron Gates has decided to reconsider his earlier transfer portal plans and is now set to return to Gainesville for the 2026 season.

Gates was previously expected to enter the transfer portal when it opened, a move that would have made him the sixth defensive back to depart the program amid widespread roster changes. Instead, the veteran defender has opted to remain with the Gators, giving new head coach Jon Sumrall a valuable piece to build around as he reshapes the roster.

The decision comes at a critical time for Florida, which has already seen multiple defensive backs move on, including Sharif Denson, Jamroc Grimsley, Teddy Foster, Jordan Castell, and Josiah Davis. Gates’ return helps stabilize a secondary that has been hit hard by transfers following a turbulent 2025 season.

Gates appeared in four games during the 2025 campaign—against LIU, USF, LSU, and Miami—before suffering a torn labrum in his shoulder that required surgery and ended his season. Prior to the injury, he recorded four tackles, three of them solo.

In 2024, Gates played a more prominent role, appearing in nine games with five starts. He finished that season with 27 tackles, including 14 solo stops, four tackles for loss, two fumble recoveries, and one interception. He also contributed on special teams during his redshirt season in 2023.

Florida finished 4–8 in 2025 and dismissed head coach Billy Napier during the season. Jon Sumrall was later hired after leading Tulane to its first-ever College Football Playoff appearance, and he now faces the challenge of restoring stability and competitiveness in Gainesville.

With Gates choosing to stay and focus on a full recovery, the Gators retain an experienced defensive back who is expected to compete for a meaningful role in 2026 as the program looks to rebound under new leadership.
